List of blogging terms

Autocasting: Autocasting is an automated form of podcasting that allows bloggers and blog-readers to create audio from text blogs using RSS feeds.

Audioblog: An audio blog is a blog where the posts consist mainly of voice recordings/audio sent by mobile phone. Sometimes some short text messages may also be added for metadata purposes.

Blog Carnival: A blog carnival is an article that contains links to other articles related to a specific topic. Most blog carnivals are hosted by a rotating list of frequent contributors to the carnival.

Blog client or Desktop blogging client: Software that allows the blogger to make blog posts without using the web-browser. Most blog clients work by using technologies like xml-rpc or the atom publishing protocol. Example: BlogDesk (www.blogdesk.org)

Blogger: Person who maintains blogs. [www.blogger.com is a popular blog hosting web site owned by Google]

Bloggernacle: Blogs maintained by Mormons. The term bloggernacle is a portmanteau of “blog” and “Tabernacle)”.

Bloggies: One of the most popular blog awards on the Internet.

Blogroll: A list of blogs, usually placed in the sidebar of a blog, that the blogger usually visits.

Blogosphere: All blogs, or the blogging community. Other names for blogosphere include blogistan and blogspace.

BlogWare: Software script that powers the blog. Example: Wordpress, Habari, etc.

Collaborative blog: A blog on which multiple bloggers post on a specific topic. Collaborative blogs are also called “group blogs”.

Comment spam: Automated bogus comments (usually links) posted on blogs for search engine benefits or direct advertising.

Fisking: Fisking refers to rebutting a blog entry in a line-by-line fashion.

Flog: “fake” + “blog”. A blog that’s ghostwritten by someone.

Milblog: “military” + “blog”. A blog maintained by a person(s) related to the military.

Moblog: “mobile” + “blog”. A blog where posts are sent by mobile phone, using SMS or MMS messages. They are often photoblogs.

Permalink: Permanent link or the unique URL of a single post. Permalinks are used to link to other posts.

Photoblog: A blog containing mainly photos.

Pingback: The alert in the TrackBack system that notifies the original poster of a blog post when someone else writes an entry concerning the original post.

Podcasting: Posting audio and video material on a blog and its RSS feed, for digital players like the iPod.

Post: An entry written and published to a blog. Also “blog post”.

Spam blog: A blog which is composed of spam: random text, scraped content, etc. Also “splog”.

TrackBack: A system that allows a blogger to see who has seen the original post and has written another entry concerning it. The system works by sending a ‘ping’ between the blogs, and therefore providing the alert.

Vlog: Blog containing mainly videos. Videos are usually posted using video sharing sites like YouTube.com.

Warblog: A blog devoted mostly to an ongoing war.
